They chose to cut the newer people (who were underperforming because they were still unfamiliar with everything, but may or may not have potential) instead of the people with 10+ years of experience who were more productive than the newer ones but not as productive as I'd expect they should be right now.

Is the "low performance" issue with the "high performers/managers" , or they're really low performer ? It's important difference.
Our layoffs happened a month or so ago. The three low performers on our team were let go. Has it been a similar story at your org?
