I would like to react rudely to that 4+ hour applicant process. I wish they would come up with a better solution to hiring.
Perhaps that company is only doing this because they have received an untenable amount of applicants who are unqualified.
So the truth of the situation seems difficult for everyone.
My advice is to vote with your feet and find a company where it's right for you.
Find a company where they have virtuous solutions to the challenges of the current world. And then post about it here because we all need to build on other people's good processes.

Any company that runs you through something like that before you've even spoken to anyone doesn't have any particular interest in _you_. I.E., they probably run EVERYONE who applies through the same hoops. Unless you absolutely have to, it's just a waste of time.

Send them an invoice to their fax number with your hourly rate for the time you spent on it. Large corporations seem to pay invoices without checking.
Example: I applied to invessed and got a canned email that linked me to this: https://invessed.com/careers/vuejs-tech-assessment/ - a 4 hour+ assesment before I've spoken to anyone. I've seen this multiple times now.
Surely there is a better way?
How do you filter applicants you want to interview?
