IMO this omits the biggest factor: because most car manufacturers are absolutely AWFUL at building software that works well.
I've got a Honda that's one model year too old to support CarPlay. It instead only supports "HondaLink", an epic hack involving a simultaneous USB + HDMI connection (yay dongle /s) and hacktacular apps written with PhoneGap that barely work and wouldn't get a passing grade in Babby's First App Design course. The apps haven't seen an update in years.
If anybody working on this, is reading this: please think of the option to put rear few mirrors or rear view cameras on these screens, so we can get finally rid of the “normal” mirrors.
