You should be learning how to do things with computers that you want to see done. For example, if there's anything in the way of software related to hotel-management that seems poorly done or just plain missing (just throwing an idea out there). Rarely does a person learn to program (or otherwise mess with computers) without having a project which has additional interest for them besides a means to a career. Also, if you are working on a project you actually want to see done, then it may be at the end that you decide you don't want to program for a living, but you have at least made a thing you wanted to see made.

By the way, I learned how to program in my early 30's.

When making decisions they say you should toss a coin. And then when it's in the air look within to see what you are secretly hoping for.

After posting this I was instinctively hoping that HN would talk me out of a career in IT. So maybe I already have my answer. I thought of deleting it, but if somebody just read this and took the time to answer I wouldn't want the thread to be gone.
